Hatteras & Ocracoke Area Features

Gidget’s Pizza and Pasta

  By: Leah Lancione

This year, Gidget’s Pizza and Pasta celebrates its 22nd season of serving high-quality Italian food on Hatteras Island. It all began in 1997, when owner Kente Ellen Gwyn moved from the Winston-Salem, NC area to the Outer Banks. Shortly thereafter, she bought Toppers Pizza and Pasta and transformed it into the upscale, casual Italian restaurant it is today. Eventually, the name was changed to Gidget’s, in honor of her nickname. And, like the TV and movie character “Gidget,” the restaurant is classy but full of spunk!

Gidget credits her staff—daughter Jessica, for managing the front of the house; son Colter, who is a chef in Raleigh, for helping with menu development; and General Manager Shane Watkins, for “keeping every aspect of the business running smoothly.”

Complementing the hospitable staff and charming ambiance is a menu of savory entrées made with the freshest of ingredients. From pizza—with 40 possible toppings—to delicious pastas, oven-baked subs, unique salads and sandwiches, diners can completely satisfy their appetites.

“Sauces, meatballs, and lasagnas are made from scratch. We hand-cut fresh vegetables for pizza toppings—even slicing our own mushrooms instead of using pre-sliced,” says Gidget. She proudly acknowledges that her daughter even makes many of the desserts. “It’s a labor of love.”

Popular dishes like Portobello Lasagna prove food here is prepared to highlight the ingredients. Gidget states, “We roast the mushrooms in-house prior to building the dish.” Entrées like Gidget’s Pasta—angel hair pasta and roasted tomatoes tossed with basil pesto—and Spinach Rolls—a lasagna-type dish with spinach and ricotta—are favorites with vegetarians. "

Gidget’s features an extensive and ever-expanding selection of over 100 wines. “Most wine lists only offer standard options by the glass, so you never get to try something new without splurging on a bottle. All of our wines are poured by the glass,” adds Gidget. Also available is a variety of North Carolina craft beers.

Gidget says her “staff are family and the restaurant feels like home.” With a host of regular diners as well as new patrons, it’s evident folks feel the same. “We are grateful to our customers for allowing Gidget’s to be successful, and we look forward to serving them for years to come!”

Gidget’s offers dine-in, carry-out, or delivery (to Avon only). The menu is online at http://pizzagidget.com  and the restaurant is open all year.
