Hatteras & Ocracoke Area Features

The Slushy Stand

  By: Leah Lancione

When BJ Oelschlegel became the proprietor of The Slushy Stand in 1994, it was housed in a plywood shack that despite its compactness, drew many loyal customers. However, when she saw the opportunity to expand to a bigger building with a wrap-around porch, she took it… and a year later The Slushy Stand moved to its current home.

BJ says much of her business is the result of day-trip traffic; folks get off the ferry, rent bikes and then after a day of exploring, reward themselves with dessert. Decked with benches, tables and rocking chairs, The Slushy Stand’s porch offers a quintessential Southern way to relax at the end of the day. BJ admits customers often say they can sit there while enjoying their coffee or ice cream and “watch the entire world go by!”

Regular customers relish the fact that doors open at 7am so patrons can grab a morning “cup of Joe,” prop open their laptop and connect to the free Wi-Fi. And for visitors, with close to 100 bikes to choose from, the possibilities for adventure are endless. “We have adult and children’s bikes in two sizes, bikes with baby seats, trailers or tag-a-longs, and even adult trikes,” says BJ.

There’s something so simple, yet satisfying about a refreshing treat, and The Slushy Stand can appease all appetites, with everything from soft-serve, milkshakes and floats to 21 flavors of ice cream, homemade waffle cones and sundaes! Popular ice cream flavors include lemon, salted caramel, banana pudding and nutty coconut. Also available are healthy, fresh fruit smoothies, a non-dairy raspberry sorbet, and a no-sugar-added ice cream.

The Slushy Stand is also a full-tilt coffee operation, offering mochas, lattes, cappuccinos, espresso and iced and hot coffee with a variety of syrups. “We use a very smooth Cuban coffee as our regular brew, which has low acidity and no afterbite,” maintains BJ.

“It’s become a destination for families,” declares BJ. She appreciates that the sentimental moments folks share on the porch become lifelong vacation memories and are at the heart of The Slushy Stand’s success.

Located off Route 12 (473 Irvin Garrish Hwy.), The Slushy Stand is open from 7am-10pm Memorial Day-Labor Day. For more information and off-season hours, visit www.theslushystand.com, www.facebook.com/slushystand, or call 252-928-1878.
