Myrtle Beach Area Features

The Chanticleers are Champs!

Coastal Carolina University is a very small college located in close proximity to the Myrtle Beach resort area. Despite its size, the academic programs offered at the university are consistently ranked highly in various national polls. In fact, the Master’s program is 100% effective in graduate placement.

Yet, on June 30, 2016, the Chanticleers (the big fabled rooster is their mascot) made very big news! Led by Head Coach Gary Gilmore, the men’s baseball team went to the College World Series and defeated the University of Arizona Wildcats 4-3. It was the school’s first appearance at the College World Series and its first ever championship win for any of its athletic programs.

To earn the championship title, the team had to compete in the Raleigh Regional Tournament against NC State and also play six playoff elimination games. They successfully went on to face the Wildcats but a few of those games were intense…

Before winning it all, the Chanticleers ultimately found themselves in a harrowing moment in the bottom of the 9th inning. Arizona was trailing by one run but had runners on 2nd and 3rd. Pitcher Alex Cunningham secured the final out and the team rushed the pitcher’s mound. Coach Gilmore’s desire to see his team in a post-game celebratory dog-pile was fulfilled as the Chanticleers became the Collegiate World Series Champions. Congrats to the Chants!
