What's New in Myrtle Beach?

  By: Jacquelyn Eurice

Every year, something new and wonderful comes to the Grand Strand. This constant evolution keeps visitors coming to the region—not only to revisit classic staples—but to experience the exciting opportunities that are now available. Sunny Day Guide can lead you to the newest events and attractions and also keep you up-to-date with current happenings at your favorite spots. So to find out “What’s New?” in Myrtle Beach, look no further!

Zookeeper for a Day

Ever wonder what it would be like to be a zookeeper? Probably awesome! Guests 12 years and older can gain that experience with Brookgreen Gardens’ new “Zookeeper for a Day” program. Follow an official zookeeper around and work with them to take care of the animals. You’ll learn how to prepare the animals’ meals and feed them, maintain their habitats and even pet a few of them. To find out the cost of the program and the qualifications required to participate, visit the Brookgreen Gardens website.

Mermaid Sightings

Kids love to dress as their favorite characters. And now they have the opportunity to see themselves as Mermaids! Wild Water & Wheels and Myrtle Beach Mermaids will be working together this summer to build fun family memories through mermaid experiences. While learning about the native marine environment, children can get a mermaid (or pirate) makeover and have portraits made of themselves. They can even practice being a mermaid while in a swim class where they try out their new fins!

Bi-Plane Rides

Myrtle Beach Air Tours just launched a new adventure with their bi-plane rides. Fly in an open-air cockpit, climbing up in altitude and swooping back down. Various packages are available to suit most budgets but the experience is something everyone will love. And the view is spectacular!

Treetop Junior

Go Ape’s newest adventure is Treetop Junior for your mini Tarzans and Janes. The Treetop Junior course offers a 1 to 1.5 hour outdoor experience designed specifically for the young adventurers in your tribe. Treetop Junior utilizes an easy-to-use safety system that will keep your young adventurers safe while they focus on having fun! Made up of 20 obstacles and 2 zip lines, the Junior course is packed with excitement, delivering a treetop experience that will leave lasting memories. Restrictions apply.

And the Winner Is…

Congratulations to The Fudgery Myrtle Beach! Coastal Living named them as having the best fudge in the nation in the magazine’s Best Boardwalk Bites awards.

Food Truck Festival

The national food truck trend has arrived in Myrtle Beach and with it is the region’s first-ever Food Truck Festival on April 1, 2017. This will surely be the first of many to come as the food truck industry continues to surge. Admission is free, just pay for whatever dish catches your eye. With ample choices in vendors, you’ll be tempted by delectable aromas to try a new dish or two!

First in the Nation!

Several new places have recently opened in The Market Common, including Southern Living. The magazine that has graced coffee tables across America just opened its first store in the Grand Strand. Another sure-to-please business moving into The Market Common is Paint & UnWined. Purchase a glass of your favorite wine while creating fabulous new art to hang on your wall!

Shark Wake Park & Aqua Park

Visit the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex to try two exciting new water activities that are unique to the region. If you have ever wanted to attempt wakeboarding but couldn’t because you didn’t have access to a boat, now is your chance. Greg Norman Jr. of the Greg Norman Company opened the business’ first-ever “Shark Wake Park.” At this outdoor venue, a pulley system takes wakeboarders around a lake where ramps and rails are stationed for those who would like to try new tricks. It’s a unique and action-packed way to ”get your feet wet” with the sport of wakeboarding .

In the summer of 2017, a planned Aqua Park is expected to open in the same lake as Shark Wake Park. This floating playground has rafts, slides, swings and obstacles including wiggle bridges where kids can safely play in the water. And yes, this man-made lake is constantly monitored for pristine water quality and to ensure that uninvited reptilian guests don’t crash the party. Lifejackets are mandatory and lifeguards are stationed nearby for added protection at both Aqua and Shark Wake Parks. These attractions are fun and novel ways to cool off and enjoy the water!

Broadway at the Beach’s Makeover

A favorite place got a brand new look for 2017 with extensive renovations and storefront changes. If you have been to Broadway at the Beach before, you’ll notice that the iconic pyramid that used to grace the entrance to the Hard Rock Cafe is gone. That restaurant moved to a nearby spot in Celebrity Square and Dave & Buster’s took its place as an anchoring tenant at Broadway at the Beach. There’s also a new nightclub, Oz, and many new breweries and restaurants including two that are backed by celebrity personalities: Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen and Wahlburgers—a burger restaurant owned by Mark Wahlberg and his family.

Ripley’s Glass Bottom Boat Adventure

You too, can now get into a tank with sharks! Actually, with Ripley’s new Glass Bottom Boat Adventure, you will be riding above these predatory fish with only a few inches of glass between your feet and the waters they swim in. This attraction is the first of its kind in the United States and is something that should not be missed. The sharks can be clearly seen up-close and in their natural environment. Visit Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach to embark on this amazing boat ride!
