Ocean City Area Features

Planet Maze & Lasertron

  By: Dorrie Anshel

When longtime Ocean City residents Rina and Jeff Thaler and Jamie and Jeff Albright became parents 25 years ago, they were constantly searching for kid-friendly activities. There were few amusements for little ones, particularly in the off-season. Where could they hold birthday parties or take the kids to play on rainy days?

The lifelong friends saw a problem and turned it into an opportunity. They and another couple, Ann and Mike Gordon, created Planet Maze, an indoor amusement space designed for families to play together. “We started Planet Maze because our own kids needed somewhere fun to go. We quickly discovered that everyone likes to play, regardless of their age,” says Jamie.

Now in its 22nd year, the enterprise grew right along with the founders’ kids. Rina recalls that when they opened, the 33rd Street corridor had more grass-covered lots than businesses. Today it’s a bustling area filled with shops, restaurants and the ever-expanding Planet Maze. The complex offers alien-themed “Lost Galaxy” mini golf, a party room and snack bar, video games, and a two-story climbing maze. The newest addition is a 3,000-sq.ft., state-of-the-art laser tag arena called Lasertron that accommodates 2 to 22 people at a time. There’s no need to bring a team—solo players are assigned to a team so they can dive right in and start playing.

Rina and Jamie expected kids and teens to love it, but the big surprise was how thoroughly adult groups have embraced it. Companies in town for conventions, fraternal organizations, even the Red Hat Ladies, have donned vests and chased each other with lasers. “Laser tag is a great way to team-build,” says Jamie. “The interactive games teach people how to work together while they have fun and get some exercise. I sometimes think the adults enjoy it more than the kids do!”

As a thank you to loyal customers, Lastertron now offers unlimited play from 10am to 4pm, Monday-Friday. “When our customers ask for something, we listen and we deliver,” says Jamie. “Our game system can create a virtually unlimited number of possibilities, so we can constantly change up the games to keep it fresh and exciting. We are always looking for new ideas, because we want to continue to welcome new generations of guests.”

Rina adds, “We started Planet Maze because we understand what families want, whether they’re here for a week or are full-time residents. We’re part of this community and work hard to be responsive to its needs. Ocean City has been great to us, and we’ve made Ocean City part of our extended family. We can’t imagine doing anything else.”

The company’s motto, “A Bad Day at the Beach is Better Than a Good Day at the Office,” sums up their philosophy, and perhaps, the secret to their longevity. Keeping it fresh, keeping customers happy, and working together are keeping Planet Maze and Lasertron on the move.
