Ocean City Area Features

Flashback Old Time Photos

  By: Alison Clary

Celebrating 40 Years of Travelling through History on the Ocean City Boardwalk

In the 1970s, Jack Glaser decided he wanted to create a memorable experience for the beach community that was unlike anything they had previously encountered. At just 29 years old, he proudly founded Flashback Old Time Photos and started with a single location in Virginia Beach, VA. The idea behind Flashback was to provide guests with the opportunity to travel back in time and obtain personalized professional photographs that they could cherish forever.

Jack had high hopes for Flashback but was not fully confident his vision would resonate with visitors. Despite his initial doubts, Flashback was an instant success and Jack began to expand his business to other resort cities.
Ocean City, MD was a top choice for an additional location because Jack was familiar with the area after spending several summers there throughout his childhood. In the 1980s, along with his parents Martin and Bertha Glaser, Jack officially opened the charming Ocean City location on North 1st Street of the city’s historic boardwalk and continued to open many other studio locations in resort towns along the East Coast.
Flashback Old Time Photos is considered one of the Ocean City Boardwalk’s most iconic establishments, and the 2018 summer season will mark the company’s 40-year anniversary. There is a second boardwalk location on Somerset Street.

Senior Staff Manager Jason Shatzer is a Certified Professional Photographer and has been with Flashback for 30 years. “Our goal here at Flashback is to make sure that new and repeat customers have a fun experience and walk away with a high-quality professional portrait that they are proud to display in their homes and show friends and relatives,” said Jason, who holds a Master of Photography Degree (A.F. Ph.) with Antique Photographers International. “I love taking pictures of the families that come in, especially the kids,” he added.
The endless prop and costume options are not run-of-the-mill items you could find at your closest thrift store. Flashback provides props from across the globe that have been re-created from original historic pieces.

Costumes are authentically designed to bring fashions from the 1840s to the 1930s back to life, and Flashback’s collection can accommodate all sizes from infant through adult. The costumes allow guests to transform into a cowboy, saloon girl, Victorian lady & gentleman, Southern gentleman, hillbilly, pirate, French maid, flapper, and countless other options!

Flashback Old Time Photos can have photos ready just minutes after they are captured. Guests are able to fully customize the final product through the large selection of custom-made antique-style frames, specialty posters, and antique mattes. They even provide mini frames and key chain versions.

Every year, Flashback incorporates fresh ideas to allow guests who return year after year to discover new personalization options. This year, they are adding old-fashioned mermaids and train conductors to the list of available options.

The business culture at Flashback is family-centered, with many team members having been a part of the company for several decades. Patrick Poloney, the current managing partner who oversees the day-to-day operations, has been with the business for over 38 years and has seen many repeat customers. Staff adore capturing the photographs just as much as the customers enjoy having their pictures taken. “People I personally photographed in the 1980s have returned in recent years to experience the thrill of old time photographs with their grandchildren,” expressed Jack.

For a unique souvenir from your Ocean City vacation, stop by either of Flashback Old Time Photos’ two boardwalk locations. Don’t forget to say cheese!
