Ocean City Area Features

Embark on a Nautical Journey

The expansive waters of the Atlantic Ocean and calm inland bays are calling to you and your fellow landlubbers. By venturing to a local pier or marina in Ocean City, you’ll find many options for an exceptional day (or evening) on the water. After all, boating is fun, relaxing, and the perfect thing to do on a beautiful day on the Atlantic coast.

Almost every boating company in the region offers a variety of tours that can cater to whatever interests you. From catching your dinner on a fishing charter to educational or scenic tours, there is a boat with a tour for you! However, young children and adults who enjoy nature should definitely check out Assateague Adventure on a tour to see the wild horses of Assateague Island. The company’s wildlife boat tours are not only educational, but everyone who goes on these excursions usually has a great time! The Duckaneer is also suitable for children who would like to imagine themselves as swashbuckling pirates aboard a “real-life” pirate ship.

Dolphin cruises bring you close to the mammals that continually captivate spectators. Their intelligence, communication styles and playful antics have endeared them to many, and the love for these mammals continues to grow. Plus, they’re fun to see in the wild. That’s why tours to see these creatures have become so popular in Ocean City. Board the Judith M or Explorer Nature Cruises so they can take you to the areas where dolphins are likely to be found.

However, if you’re one of those who can’t be on a boat without a fishing pole in their hands, quite a few companies offer great options for full- and half-day fishing trips. Aboard their vessels, you’ll cruise into the Atlantic Ocean or the Chesapeake Bay on excursions designed for anglers of all ages and skill levels. Flounder, marlin, rockfish and grouper are just a few fish that you might be able to hook. However, what you catch depends on where you go fishing. If you want to fish for something specific, be sure to communicate that with the captain to see if the excursion offered is appropriate for you. Don’t worry about bringing any equipment or if you aren’t an experienced angler. Most of the local fishing tours provide bait, tackle, rod, reel and expertise. Good luck hooking the big one!

Rental boats are also available to aspiring captains and their first mates. Take the entire family out onto the waters of Assawoman Bay for a boating adventure through any of the reputable companies you’ll find at marinas in the region. They have everything you need for a great day on the water including safety equipment, a boater’s certificate (if necessary) and your choice of pontoon or jet boats for rent. And everywhere you look, it’s easy to find jet skiers racing along the waterways off the coasts of Ocean City. There are tons of places where you can rent a jet ski and experience the fun for yourself. Whether you opt for a solo jet ski or prefer to team up on a double- or triple-seater, the freedom to explore the bay is in your hands. Zip over waves, swerve around curves, and travel at high speeds on this exhilarating experience.

Perhaps a slower approach is more your speed. If so, try taking out a non-motorized vessel—a kayak—while staying on the Maryland shore. Kayaking gives you and your family the opportunity to pleasantly discover hidden coves along the bays and rivers or natural splendors of the open sea. With good reason, the number of people enjoying this activity has exploded in Ocean City during the last several years. Kayakers can set their own pace and choose an exhilarating adventure by riding breaking waves in rough waters. Or, they can opt for a more peaceful expedition, exploring pristine sound-side waters alive with wildlife. This environment provides a more controlled way of participating in the sport. Many watersports outfitters offer guided tours where participants can learn about salt marshes, waterfowl, and marine critters as well as history and local legends. Anglers have also adopted kayaks as an efficient, affordable way to seek out secret, productive fishing grounds on both sides of the islands.

In addition to boarding a boat for deep sea fishing or touring local waterways, there are other fantastic nautical experiences that visitors may enjoy. Adventurers don’t have to travel far to find excitement at new heights or thrilling speeds. Try taking a banana boat ride from Under the Bridge Watersports or Paradise Watersports. You’ll be bouncing along on this group raft as a powerboat speeds you over the ocean waves. On the other hand, the brightly colored parasails may take hold of your attention. So why not try it? A gorgeous vista awaits those brave enough to take to the skies to see the Maryland coastline from a different (and higher) perspective while parasailing from the back of a boat. You can go by yourself or with one or two other people. And many companies allow you to stay dry on a parasail ride if that is your preference. However, a quick dip in the ocean after soaring closer to the sun is a lot of fun and quite refreshing!

With so many options for a memorable boating experience, you would be remiss not to take advantage of them while vacationing in Ocean City. Sunny Day Guide has many great coupons and deals so that you can save some money while having a blast! So “seas” the day and go find your adventure on the water!
