Coastal Delaware Area Features

Rehoboth Beach: Classic Coastal Destination

Rehoboth Beach has all the characteristics of a classic coastal destination: frozen custard, a boardwalk, beach fries, and shops selling sunblock and umbrellas. It also has fun.

The city was recently named one of the top 10 beaches in the nation for families by Family Vacation Critic, a website that reviews family-friendly resorts, hotels, destinations and attractions. Criteria included cleanliness, safe water for swimming, and activities close to the beach.

But the city has other advantages for everyone –  with or without children. There are many distinctive dining and shopping experiences as well as unique services.

Founded in 1873, Rehoboth initially hosted Methodist Episcopal Church camp meetings. But even as early as the late 19th century, the seeds for a seaside resort were sown; a boardwalk was built in 1873. Although the Rehoboth Camp Meeting Association discontinued formal meetings by 1881, the visitors kept coming. In 1891, the area became a municipality called Cape Henlopen City. The name changed in 1893 to Rehoboth Beach.

Visitors see hints of the past at the Rehoboth Beach Museum. Generations have enjoyed saltwater taffy since the 1920s, boardwalk amusements since 1961, and pizza since 1963.

In more recent years, however, Rehoboth has become as well-known for its culinary scene as it is for its candy and arcades. Within a few blocks, you can indulge any craving, whether it‘s sushi, italian or upscale Latin. Craft beer fans come from all over the country to sip esoteric suds.

The shopping scene is as diverse as the dining. Consider whimsical home accessories or magical jewelry pieces. There are gift shops, galleries and sunglass shops. You’ll find kites, games, books, handmade soap and perfume, not to mention Christmas ornaments. And since Rehoboth Beach is so pedestrian-friendly, you can park the car once and shop to your heart’s content.

Parking has been made easier with Parkmobile. Apply for a parking permit online or use a smartphone mobile app to activate a parking session in a numbered space. The program texts the user 15 minutes prior to the session’s expiration.

Various fun events are held throughout the summer and fall. So come visit fantastic Rehoboth Beach. For more information, visit and
