Virginia Beach Area Features

Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center

Get up close and personal with Virginia Beach’s most beloved residents at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center. From the harbor seals who greet you at the entrance to the sea turtles and sharks that await you inside, you’ll be able to make your Virginia Beach visit come alive. With more than 10,000 animals representing over 350 species, there is something for everyone to see and enjoy.

See eye to eye with Komodo dragons, go below the water with endangered Malaysian crocodiles, and interact with playful river otters. Featuring over 300 hands-on exhibits, live animal habitats, and a beautiful one-third-of-a-mile nature trail, there are hundreds of ways to learn and play.

Want to see more? Take a Virginia Aquarium boat trip and see dolphins, pelicans, and other native wildlife. Or help work a trawl net to collect fish and invertebrates during an Ocean Collections trip. In the winter months, Virginia Aquarium boat trips search for whales and migratory animals that visit Virginia’s coastal waters. Each trip is staffed by trained, knowledgeable on-board educators.

World of Giant Insects, a changing exhibit at the Virginia Aquarium through September 4, 2017, shrinks you down smaller than a bug to view some of the mightiest animals on earth. This collection of oversized robotic insects will be sure to amaze you. These colossal carnivores and herbivores will crawl, fly, camouflage, and metamorphose throughout the changing exhibit gallery at the Aquarium. Want to take control? Operate the robotic heads of three insects! You can move the giant mosquito, the massive honeybee, and the oversized dragonfly heads while learning about these cool bugs! Plus, coming in late September 2017, see Goosebumps: the Science of Fear.

Don’t miss the National Geographic 3D Theater at the Virginia Aquarium. With the largest movie screen in Virginia, each seat has an incredible view of one of the educational and entertaining movies being shown. Keep an eye out for Hollywood favorites making a return to the big screen, too!
