Virginia Beach Area Features

Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center

Get up close and personal with Virginia Beach’s most beloved residents at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center. From the sea turtles in the Light Tower exhibit to the sharks swimming in the Norfolk Canyon aquarium, you’ll be able to make your Virginia Beach visit come alive. With more than 10,000 animals representing over 300 species, there is something for everyone to see and enjoy.

See eye to eye with Komodo dragons, go below the water with endangered Malaysian crocodiles, and interact with playful river otters. Featuring hands-on exhibits, live animal habitats, and a beautiful one-third-of-a-mile nature trail, there are hundreds of ways to learn and play.

Want to see more? Take a Virginia Aquarium boat trip and see dolphins, pelicans, and other native wildlife. Or help work a trawl net to collect fish and invertebrates during an Ocean Collections trip. In the winter months, Virginia Aquarium boat trips search for whales and migratory animals that visit Virginia’s coastal waters. Each trip is staffed by trained, knowledgeable on-board educators.

The Virginia Aquarium’s newest exhibit, Here Be Dragons, has taken over the changing exhibits gallery through September 2, 2018. Featuring three dragon realms — the Asian dragon realm, the Medieval dragon realm, and the Paleontological dragon realm — the exhibit invites guests to explore dragons, witness how dragons have influenced certain cultures and time periods, and interact with dragon-themed activities. This exhibit also features dragons and their real-life lizard counterparts, including the black-throated monitor, plumed basilisk, Chinese water dragons, and more! Plus, coming in late September 2018, see Curious George: Let’s Get Curious!

Don’t miss the Virginia Aquarium Giant Screen Theater. With the largest movie screen in Virginia, each seat has an incredible view of the educational and entertaining movies being shown.
