Virginia Beach Area Features

Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum

Coastal history is alive and thriving at the Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum.

Standing proudly at 24th Street on the boardwalk, the museum building itself is a Virginia Beach icon on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1903, this original Life-Saving Station was one of the first structures along the oceanfront.

Inside you’ll discover an abundance of treasures, memories and stories that transport you back in time. Imagine the beach before the resort hotels, and explore exhibits of the famous rescuers that made history saving storm-tossed ships and those that sailed them.

Take in the amazing story of our modern beach rescue service, the lifeguards. From a handful of hired hands in the early years, our lifeguard service has become one of the largest and most respected deep-water rescue units in the US.

And you’ll get to “hang ten” with local surfing legends and pioneers. See the longboards of the early surfers and paddle through fun exhibits of the sun-drenched beach and boardwalk in the “good ol’ days.” Imagine ice cream for a nickel and check out how the decades transformed a once sleepy
cottage community.

Enjoy many hands-on activities, laugh through a scavenger hunt, or just hang out and play some cornhole on the yard. This is also the home of the Virginia Beach Ghost Walk, so don’t be surprised if someone you don’t know joins your tour. Check the website for happy hours and special events.

Take your time while visiting this very special place. Explore, enjoy, and make some history of your own to treasure.
