How To Get Around

All HRT vehicles, except light rail, are equipped with electronic fareboxes. Fareboxes accept cash, coins and HRT magnetic-stripe farecards. They cannot make change, so please have exact fare when boarding.

Locations at the Oceanfront where you can purchase passes.

Trolley riders can purchase as many tickets as they want, wherever they like by downloading HR Transit’s app onto their smartphones. In 2018, Hampton Roads Transit debuted this convenience for its oceanfront trolleys in and eventually this system will be used to purchase fares for area buses, Norfolk’s light rail, and the ferry between Norfolk and Portsmouth.

Discounted fares for Hampton Roads Transit are available for the following: Youth (17 and under), Seniors (65+), Persons with disabilities and Medicare Cardholders. (Photo ID required)

VB Wave Trolley & Bayfront Shuttle

Hampton Roads Transit’s VB Wave trolley and Bayfront shuttle services are an easy way to get around the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, Rudee Inlet or even reach First Landing State Park along the Chesapeake Bay to walk the trails. Hop on board, kick back and let them do the driving.

Route 30, Atlantic Avenue Trolley

Ride the VB Wave from one end of Atlantic Avenue to the other. Stop along the way at shops, restaurants, museum and more. Daily May – September from 8am – 2am. Runs about every 15 minutes.

Route 31, Aquarium and Campground Trolley

Ride the VB Wave south to the campgrounds, tennis courts, fun parks and to the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center. Catch the Atlantic Avenue Shuttle for points north. Aquarium and Ocean Breeze serviced during operating hours only. Daily May – Labor Day from 9:30am – 11:10pm. Runs about every 20 minutes.

Route 35, Bayfront Shuttle

Route 35 will provide seasonal service between Arctic Ave./19th Street and Vista Circle in Virginia Beach. Route 35 will service the Oceanfront, First landing State Park, North End beaches, Chesapeake beaches and Bayfront restaurants on Shore Drive. Daily May – Labor Day from 8am – 12am. Runs about every 45 minutes. September 8 – October 1, 2018 service will operate on Friday, Saturday and Sunday only from 8am – 12am. Again, runs about every 45 minutes.

The MAX

The MAX, or Metro Area Express, is a regional express service connecting riders to cities across Hampton Roads.

Ride the MAX 960

Hourly service that boards at 19th Ave. and Arctic Ave. and takes you to downtown Norfolk attractions such as Waterside, Battleship Wisconsin and MacArthur Mall.

1-Day MAX Pass: $7.50
1-Day MAX Passes (Bundle of 5): $35.00
30-Day MAX Pass: $125.00

MAX Passes include unlimited rides on Express, Regular, Ferry, VB Wave and Shuttle services.
