Virginia Beach Area Features

Beach Soccer “Silver Anniversary” at NASSC 2018

“Ole..Ole..Ole” at Oceanfront June 8-10

In a wild blend of beach sports in an Olympic-like atmosphere, the Ferguson North American Sand Soccer Championships (NASSC) returns to the resort city June 8-10. One of the largest global beach sports festivals, the massive sandblast has been produced by the local non-profit Hampton Roads Soccer Council (HRSC) since 1994 to develop and maintain its privately operated 75-acre HRSC Soccer Complex in the City’s Princess Anne Commons. Volunteers from HRSC affiliate clubs Beach FC, the Virginia Rush, the Southeastern Virginia Women’s Soccer Association and the Over-30 Men’s League, along with military/corporate volunteers, staff the event. A festival player/fan base of 200,000 is expected, supporting 10,000 youth and adult sand gladiators, from an Under-8 division through adult kickers. Over 80 skill/age/gender divisions ensure fun for everyone!

NASSC is repeatedly honored by the Southeast Tourism Society (STS) as one of its Top 20 summer events, and has been cited by Discovery/ESPN’s “BRAND USA” concept as one of the premier sports tourism attractions in the United States. This year’s guest celebrities include Ms. Cecili Weber, Miss Virginia 2017.

Athletes will be competing between 9th and 35th Streets, including the U.S. Open pro/am clash as the festival’s centerpiece where spectators can enjoy many of the top U.S. and international teams battling for a cash purse. Early pro entries include the Costa Rican national team and a premier squad from the Netherlands. An inaugural Women’s U.S. Open division will also be offered as evidence of NASSC’s future possible enhancements. Non-soccer “SideKick” venues for 2018 include: Beach Field Hockey the COED Flag Football Beach Blastoff, the North American Beach Wrestling Championships, and "Knockerball."

NASSC is open to the public at no charge. For more information, please visit www.sandsoccer.com or call 757-368-4600.
