Outer Banks Area Features

Adults can play like kids on the Outer Banks! While some activities are reserved for adults only, there are also a bunch that are fun for any age but may be more enjoyable with like-minded friends. Here are a few suggestions for anyone heading to the Outer Banks for an adults-only getaway.

Learn Something New

Sign up to discover a new talent or sport. Those who like excitement can take a class that teaches a new sport such as kiteboarding or surfing. Others may enjoy an art class or an exploration of history at a local museum. There are even classes available for those who wish to learn how to fly a plane. Whatever your preference, you’ll be expanding your mind and maybe your capabilities!

Have a Drink

Beer, Wine, Liquor… The Outer Banks makes it all! And there are some great places where those who are of legal age can sample these delicious elixirs. There are five breweries in the region: The Weeping Radish in Grandy, the Outer Banks Brewing Station in Kill Devil Hills, the Lost Colony Brewery & Cafe in Manteo, the 1718 Brewery on Ocracoke, and the Northern Outer Banks Brewing Company in Corolla. Each brews many different types of beers—from IPAs and Porters to Wheats and Sours. For wine lovers, Sanctuary Vineyards is a popular stop. In addition to the favorite varietals that are easily recognized, Sanctuary Vineyards also produces wines that are made with regional grapes and even local fruits. Rum made at the OBX Distillery is exclusive to the area. In fact, the relatively new company distills a rum that is made with locally sourced pecans and honey. Make a non-traditional mojito with their white rum, lime, soda water, sugar and a local fruit from a farmers market to enjoy after a long day at the beach. Delicious!

Sightsee from Horseback

Gallop through the surf or ride over the dunes saddled on majestic steeds for an unforgettable experience. To make it more magical, book a tour at sunset! The guides take guests to scenic locations and on beautiful paths. Perhaps the tour guide will take a photo as a remembrance of the amazing journey you had on the beach.

Go Shopping

Whether it’s a gift for the home or a personal item for your special someone, it may be fun to shop for a priceless treasure. The Outer Banks has an array of products that are unique to the area and will remind you of a great vacation. Pick out a custom painting that captures the feeling of the trip and serves as a wonderful memento. A locally made objet d’art such as a vase or sculpture can also be an ever-present reminder of your trip.

Dance to the Music

Many bars and restaurants host local bands in the evenings. The live music creates a party atmosphere where everyone is dancing to the beat. You’ll find varying types of music including rock, country, and even reggae or bluegrass. Don’t miss the Mustang Spring Jam every May or the Mustang Rock and Roast in October. Both events feature a number of bands and they’ll be rocking out for charity. Proceeds from the events will benefit the Corolla Wild Horse Fund. On select days throughout the year, Sanctuary Vineyards also has live performers at the vineyard. Sip some of their delicious wines while listening to the local talent!
